The future of frozen pizza is here

Banza, the company you probably recognize thanks to their expansive selection of chickpea-based pastas in bright-orange boxes, is branching out to a new frontier: frozen pizza (made with chickpea crust, of course).

This innovation, which officially launched today, October 19, is the first-ever frozen pizza of its kind, joining an aisle filled with mostly wheat- and cauliflower-based crust options. In addition to the fact that chickpeas are an environmentally friendly food source, these new pies boast more protein and fiber, are gluten-free, and contain less sodium and fewer net carbs than pretty much all of the competition. If all of the above are qualities that you are looking for in frozen pizza, then this is the frozen pizza for you.

How To Cook Farro

The new line includes Four Cheese, Roasted Veggie, Margherita, and a Plain Crust two-pack for endless customization opportunities. As for how they taste? We were lucky enough to get our hands on some pies to try them out.

There’s nothing that Lifestyle Director, Lisa Freedman, loves more than cheese pizza (except for maybe her dog), which is why she was the perfect candidate to conduct a taste test. Above is the pie pre-oven, and below is the pie just 15 minutes later — post-bake!

Her first observation? “The crust definitely does not taste like chickpeas. It’s honestly not that far off from a typical pizza dough (and I’m the first one to notice/complain when I’m eating something with good-for-you swaps).”

So far so good. Up next: “The sauce is flavorful and the cheese plentiful (it takes a lot of cheese to make me happy). This is honestly better than other frozen pizza I’ve tried before — and I’ve tried a lot of frozen pizzas,” Lisa confesses.

As for portion size, Lisa was worried that a single pie wasn’t going to be enough to satisfy both her and her husband, “but it’s like their pasta where it’s more filling than you’d think. If you whip up a quick salad, this would definitely make a good for dinner for two.”
